Essential Vocabulary!
- syntax- order of words in a sentence; order of letters/commands in different computer languages;
- a rhetorical question - a question that you ask without expecting or wanting an answer;
- to refer (v)- (a) to describe something, or to be about something: These notes refer to the following theory by .... . Please refer to our catalogue for details. (b) to mention someone or something when you are speaking or writing : She referred to the subject several times during her explanation.
- PARSING DATA refers to the process by which programming
data input is broken into smaller, more distinct chunks of information
that can be more easily interpreted and acted upon.
- Consecutive: following one after another. E.g. 1, 2, 3, 4,...
- average - the mean; e.g. the average of 5, 7 , 12 is 24/3 = 8
- deduction- the process of finding something out from the information you have or something that you know from the information you have
- induction- the process of formally making someone part of a group;
- induction course: a period of training that introduces people into a new group or institution or a new course or computer programme.
- to tackle (verb); tackling e.g. I would like you to tackle this problem.
- approximation
- contradiction- a difference between two statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both of them to be true
- probable - to be likely to happen or be true
- rephrase - to say or right the same thing, using different words
- the remainder - the part of something that is left after the rest has gone or been finished. E.g. 20 divided by 3 is 6 with a remainder of 2.
- remaining- still left after other people or things have gone or been dealt with.
- conventional - using ordinary or traditional methods; nothing new
- prescribed - as in a 'prescribed answer'- fixed; conforming to set usage, procedure, or discipline
- ad hoc method - to be done as needed/required along the way
- significance- of extreme importance; stands out ... to be significant ; to make a significant contribution to research...
Other technical language
1) cluster - A
lot of networked computers that can act together
(concurrently/simultaneously) to do very large scale
computation.
2) topology - a branch of mathematics ....
2) conjecture- theory based on information that is not complete

other vocabulary from David's lectures:
repel (v) -if one thing repels another, an electrical/magnetic force pushes them away from each other.
oscillate/vibrate (v); as in: oscillating or vibrating objects -to move quickly from side to side at a steady speed (vibrate).
speculate(v)-to consider/discuss why something has happened; speculative(adj)- based on guesses or on only a little information; speculation(n)-guesses about why something has happened.
collide/bump; as in: particles colliding or bumping into one another
ionise(v); ionisation(n)-
emit;
as in: light being emitted/sent out/given off; as in the case of a spark being emitted when an electric
current moves through a gas.
deflect- if something deflects, or is deflected, it hits something and starts to move in a different direction
stationary - to be still and not moving. *note that stationery is something totall different.
displace(v); displacement(n)

banking, financial & other terminology:
commodity/commodities - a product/products that can be bought or sold.
trading- to buy and sell goods or services: Investors can now trade stocks online*Cuba continues to trade with other countries around the world.
investment (n) invest (v) -money that is used in a way that may earn you more money; for example; money used for buying shares in a company : The new laws will attract foreign investment.
company - an organization that sells services or goods e.g. an oil company such as OPEC.
shares - one of the equal parts of a company that you can buy as a way of investing money : Share prices fell on the Tokyo Stock exchange today.
stocks - shares in a company.
assets- something that gives you benefits; something such as money or property that a company owns.
return- a profit or money you have invested: e.g. We were able to get a return of 10% on our investment.
volatility - refers to something being easily affected/altered/changed a volatile situation can suddenly change or become more dangerous. The stock market is volatile.
drift -a slow gradual change or movement
deterministic term-
one term dominates another - has control/power over something else
fundamental(adj) - relates
to the most basic nature/character of something e.g. *There is a
fundamental flaw in his argument * We shall have to make some
fundamental changes in the way we communicate.
fundamentally(adv) - (1) in a very important or basic way : His entire approach to the problem is fundamentally flawed. (2) used for emphasizing the basic nature or character of something :e.g. Fundamentally, she is a political writer
reflected in the price - in
this case 'reflected' means : to show that something is true of a
particular situation, in this case the price shows something to be
true. Another eg. *He said that the statement did not reflect his own views.
speculative (adj) -based on guesses or on only a little information
speculation (n) - guesses about why something has happened or what might happen
Monte Carlo Methods - (concept came from gambling) -to guess random events
